allAfrica.com * Islamists Under Fire On Ethiopian Military Base in Capital Shabelle Media Network (Mogadishu) NEWS 24 June 2008 Posted to the web 24 June 2008 By Abdinasir Mohamed Guled Fighting between Islamist-led fighters and allied Somali-Ethiopian troops has erupted in Mogadishu after Armed with propelled grenades and machine guns Alshabab Islamic fighters have assaulted on Ethiopian troop's army pedestals known as Aslubta and small police station nearby on the remote northern Mogadishu Tuesday residents said. Stray bullets from crossfire killed unknown figure of the neighboring civilians in a separate incident about the same time the Islamists suddenly attacked at Somali military base resident Fatuma Hussein said a mortar landed on her neighbor's house in the vicinity of the Battled area. She had no further details on the incident. The Ethiopian troops have responded with mortars when Alshabab fighters closed on their army base. The causalities from those mortar shelling remains unknown. Somalia's government and members of an exiled opposition group signed a U.N.-mediated ceasefire in Djibouti earlier this month, but some Islamist leaders and Alshabab on the ground rejected the pact. They say they will not talk until thousands of Ethiopian troops backing President Abdullahi Yusuf's government leave the Horn of Africa nation.
