allAfrica.com * Igodo, Bayelsa Militant Leader, Killed This Day (Lagos) NEWS 29 June 2008 Posted to the web 30 June 2008 By Segun James Yenagoa The state of uncertainty in Bayelsa State got worse over the weekend as a Permanent Secretary in the state civil service, Ekpareba Apiri was assassinated in his home town, Okodi in Ogbia Local Government area of the state, just as Prince Igodo, a militant leader who was involved in a shoot out last week with another group and was reportedly injured during the bloody clash has been executed by members of a rival group. Igodo's death is coming after security operatives told newsmen that they picked him up from his hospital bed, a few days ago. A source has it that Igodo was traced to Emete, a neighbouring community to Ekeowe in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area where he was initially rushed to for medical treatment following gun shot wounds by his rivals. The assassination of the permanent secretary was yesterday confirmed by the police. Police Public Relations Officer, Bayelsa State Command; Iniobong Ibokette, who also said efforts are being put in place to trace his killer(s). THISDAY gathered that Apiri, a medical doctor, was waylaid by yet to be identified assassins while on his way from the Christian wake keep of the father of the Aide De Camp to the Vice President, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan. The permanent secrertary was shot at close range by the killers who escaped immediately. The corpse of Apiri has been deposited at an undisclosed mortuary, while the police claim it has commenced investigation into the killing.
