HOME [allAfrica.com] Shabelle_Media_Network (Mogadishu) ****** Somalia: Hawiye Traditional Elders Denounce AU ****** 24 December 2008 =============================================================================== Mogadishu — Hawiye traditional elders have denounced the request of the African Union statement about the withdrawal of the Ethiopian troops which AU requested Ethiopia to potstone its troop withdrawal from Somalia on Wednesday. The African Union Special envoy to Somalia Nicolas Bwakira on Monday urged Ethiopia to delay its planned withdrawal from Somalia until further AU troops are deployed in the country. Ahmed Dirie Ali, spokesman of Hawiye Traditional Council said that the African Union is pleased what he called the massacre of the civilians and the bombardment of Mogadishu residents carried out by the Ethiopian troops in Somalia. He called for Ethiopia to quicken its troop withdrawal from Somalia to save the peace agreement signed in Djibouti between the Alliance for the Re-liberation of Somalia and the transitional federal government. Mr. Dirie urged to the insurgents to put a hold to the attacks against the Ethiopian troops until they leave the country. The people in Mogadishu expected the Ethiopian troops to withdraw from Somalia on 19 December 2008 as the modalities of Djibouti peace deal stating. Ethiopian troops backing the transitional federal government came to Somalia in 2006 to help defeat the Islamic Courts Union, which brought relative peace to much of south and central Somalia.
