HOME [allAfrica.com] Garowe_Online (Garowe) ****** Somalia: Forum On Security Opens in Puntland Capital ****** 24 December 2008 =============================================================================== A meeting on security opened Wednesday in Somalia's Puntland region, where the region's parliament is expected to elect the next president in January 2009, Radio Garowe reports. Eydarus Haji Hersi, the new police chief in Garowe, the capital of Puntland, chaired the meeting which was also attended by community leaders and presidential candidates. Hundreds of heavily armed militias are roaming Garowe streets and most are employed as personal security for more than 15 candidates, as well as the additional presence of Puntland government security forces. On Wednesday, 10 armed trucks from Bossaso entered Garowe and it remained unclear if the newly arrived troops would be taking up in security efforts. Local journalists were banned from attending the forum, which was held at the Puntland Library and Research Center.in Garowe. Puntland, in northeastern Somalia, is a self-governing region that has seen deteriorating security conditions since 2005, when Muse came to power. Meanwhile in Garowe, the 66-seat Puntland Parliament is expected to be announced this week, which will elect the next Puntland president on January 8, 2009. Copyright © 2008 Garowe Online.
