Aronda Nyakirima has said the UPDF has no institutional claim of bringing peace to Uganda but that every Ugandan in one way or the other contributed to the existing peace. He said the UPDF will use the current calm to consolidate peace not only in Uganda but also in the region as it has done in Southern Sudan, Burundi and as part of the African Union peace keeping mission in Somalia. Gen. Aronda made the remark during the burial of Maj. Francis Okot Wilit in Kitgum on Monday. Maj. Okot died on July 21 at the Joint Clinical Research Centre, Mengo after a long illness. Before his death, Maj. Okot served as Commander Task Force, Commander Squad One of special operations unit, Brigade Operations and Training Officer 409 Brigade, and LDU commander Siera Battalion. He was also commanding officer Alfa Battalion, Commanding officer Helbon Battalion and the officer in charge of security at internally displaced peoples camp in Kitgum District of which he was relieved when his health deteriorated and Lt Col. Fearless Obwoya took over. Gen Aronda urged people of northern Uganda to utilise the prevailing peace to develop the region. Maj. Okot was described as a brave, disciplined and experienced officer who contributed much in fighting insurgency in the northern region when he was commanding various army units.
