The MPs, while meeting the defence committee yesterday, said as a result, there was an upsurge of cattle raids and insecurity in the region. The committee is assessing the success of the disbarment exercise. The MPs said more women were being raped and the number of deaths had increased. The MPs, under the Karamoja Parliamentary Group, said they suspected that the warriors were getting guns from Southern Sudan and Kenya. Upe MP Francis Kiyonga warned that if the Government did not increase security on the borders, the disarmed Karimojong would acquire more guns. "The Government should move fast to bring on board the Kenyan and Sudanese governments. They need to disarm their tribes to stop more guns from coming in Uganda," Kiyonga said. Kiyonga said although the army had collected 75% of the guns, the remaining ones were causing more problems than before. "Those disarmed have become victims. They have lost everything," he said. Kiyonga noted that since the disbarment started, Upe county had recorded 33 raids and about 2,542 head of cattle had been stolen. The Government in 2004 launched the disbarment programme aimed at reducing cattle rustling. While drumming up communities support, President Yoweri Museveni assured the Karimojong that the Government would ensure their security and safety. Copyright © 2009 New Vision. All rights reserved.
