All the suspects, with the exception of the Kawempe Division chairperson, Nasser Takuba, who was granted bail by the Nabweru court on Tuesday, were remanded in various prisons. In Kampala, Mwanga II Court yesterday denied 52 suspects bail and ordered them to reappear in court on October 1. The prosecutor said the suspects, between September 10 and 12, engaged in rioting and inciting violence in Kisekka Market, Old Taxi Park, Gaddafi Road, Bulenga, Mengo, Rubaga and Kasubi, all Kampala suburbs. Some of the suspects were charged with vandalising property. The prosecutor objected to bail for the suspects, arguing that the situation in the city was still tense and the suspects would interfere with the investigations. The Makindye Court prosecutor said some suspects were taken to Nsangi Court to speed up the trial. Over 600 suspected rioters were arrested in the three-day violent protests that begun on Thursday. In Masaka, 80 suspects appeared before Chief Magistrate Moses Katorogo. Some suspects, who included five children and Muslims arrested on the way to pray, were released. The suspects on remand in Masaka Prison are expected in court today. In a related development, the Police yesterday arrested the Mityana town councillor over the riots. Kabuzi Balamaga (DP) is said to have been the ringleader of the riots in the town. By Juliet Waiswa , Brian Mayanja, Ali Mambule, Luke Kagiri and John Semakula Copyright © 2009 New Vision.
