Israel Kills 11 Palestinians, Wounds 100 In Gaza Raid

Israeli occupation forces killed 11 people, wounds 100 in the camp

OCCUPIED JERUSALEM, March 6 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - Eleven Palestinians were killed and more than 100 others wounded early Thursday, March 6, during a five-hour-long Israeli raid on Jabaliya refugee camp in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian medical sources said.

Eight died when the tanks fired fragmentation shells that exploded in the middle of a crowd at the entrance to the town of Jabaliya and four others breathed their last during the night.

Four of the wounded, 30 of whom were in serious condition, were Palestinian journalists working for Reuters news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP) reported.

The raid on the most densely populated camp in the Palestinian territories came hours after the latest resistance attack on a bus in the town of Haifa that killed 15 people.

Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas and Islamic Jihad said the bombing comes in revenge for Palestinians killed by Israeli gunfire during the last two days, including an 85-year-old man and a nine-month pregnant women.

Some 40 Israeli tanks and armored vehicles advanced into northern Gaza shortly after midnight, backed by helicopters which fired three rockets at targets in the Jabaliya area, security sources said. They encountered fierce resistance from Palestinian fighters during the raid.

The occupation army cut off electricity in the north of the Gaza Strip, including Beit Lahia, Jabaliya and Beit Hanoun, they said, adding that at least three houses were dynamited by them during the incursion.

Israeli military sources confirmed troops were pulling out of the area early Thursday, but would give no further details.

The army has undertaken several similar raids into Gaza over the last weeks, including one into a southern Gaza refugee camp early Monday which left eight Palestinians dead, including a pregnant woman and a teenager, and drew heavy international criticism over the high number of civilian casualties.

More Palestinian Casualty

Israeli occupation forces also shot dead a Palestinian resistance fighter from the Jihad movement on Thursday.

The 24-year-old man was killed in a shootout with the occupation forces in the West Bank town of Bethlehem which carried out a search operation in the Wadi Mali district of the city, Palestinian security sources said.
