At Least Five Israeli Soldiers Killed In Gaza Raid

At least 11 Palestinian people were killed and 130 others injured since the Israeli incursion began on Tuesday

GAZA CITY, May 12 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) - At least five Israeli soldiers were killed Wednesday, May 12, when their armored personnel carrier was destroyed during an Israeli incursion into the southern Gaza Strip.

Israel said the vehicle was near the border with Egypt when the bomb went off but did not confirm casualties, reported the BBC News Online.

Eight Palestinians who were near the site of the explosion sustained light injuries from flying metal scraps, Palestinian medical sources were quoted as saying by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

Sources close to Jewish settlers in the area said several Israeli soldiers were seriously wounded in the blast.

A bomb was remotely detonated against the vehicle, which was part of a convoy driving through the border area near Rafah's refugee camps, they added.

The Popular Resistance Committee was responsible for the attack, Palestinian security sources told CNN.

The attack came as the Israeli army launched its biggest offensive in Gaza for years, killing at least 11 Palestinians and wounding 130 others since Tuesday, May 11.

The occupation forces demolished buildings and burst into homes in the densely populated Zeitoun quarter, backed up by snipers on rooftops and Apache helicopters hovering overhead.

Navy gunboats shelled the coast and opened fire on an area near Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Arafat's old compound.

Six Israeli soldiers  were killed by the Palestinian resistance fighters during the incursion on Tuesday, the highest Israeli casualty count in a single army operation in two years.

Resistance fighters displayed what they said was the head of an Israeli soldier before TV cameras but reports said they would likely return the remains to Israel.
