Attempts to force refugees back to Chechnya

Officials from the Council of Non-Governmental Organizations reported referring to the Social Refugee Committee that power was shut off in Satsita refugee camp on October 29. Local authorities are blaming it on the lack of capacity of the camp’s transformer.

At the same time former residents of Bella refugee camp claim that their transformers are now for sale at a lumber yard in the village of Troitskaya, which belongs to a relative of one of the officials of Migration Service of Ingushetia. Chechen forced settlers («muhajirs») are getting ready to file a lawsuit because their rights have been violated.

Cold weather makes lives of refugees harder

The recent fall/winter cold weather made the lives of the Chechen «muhajirs» on the

territory of Ingushetia even harder. Low pressure in gas lines to the camps resulted in single-digit Celsius temperatures (lower 30s Fahrenheit) in many tents. The refugees say they have to wrap their children in warm clothes and sleep with their clothes on, because it gets even colder at night.

Shabby tents are another problem that concerns the residents of the refugee camps. Over a half of these tents have used up their resources thinkable and unthinkable, and are now totally worn out. But the Ingushetian authorities, who are trying to force the refugees back to Chechnya, are not taking any steps to improve the living conditions in the refugee camps, - CCNR Press Center reported (Chechen Committee for National Rescue).

Chechen businessman released

In the evening of October 30 French authorities released Chechen businessman Abdullah Erzanukayev from custody. On October 24 Russian businessman, who slandered the Chechen businessman, withdrew his complaint and made an apology during a cross-examination. At the present time Mr. Erzanukayev has given a written undertaking not to leave until the investigation is completed, - Kavkaz Center’s sources reported from Paris.

Earlier it was reported that one of Mr. Erzanukayev’s business partners was forced by the FSB (Federal Security Bureau of the Russian Federation, former KGB) to tell the French authorities that Erzanukayev was allegedly extorting some money out of him. Even though there were no proofs presented, on September 17, 2003 over 10 agents of French financial police broke into Erzanukayev’s home and started a downright raid under the guise of a search. Even cellular phones were seized. After that Mr. Erzanukayev was put in jail in Paris.
