In the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia there are
646.066 refugees - one refugee per 15 citizens.
Out of that number, 6.609 are of Moslem
nationality, 4.750 of Croatian nationality - this
confirms that the FRY is the only state in the territory
of the former Yugoslavia which preserved its multi-ethnic
character.
Out of the mentioned number of refugees, only
51.800 opted for repatriation. The basic reasons why such
a small number of refugees wants to return to their
places of residence is the absence of guarantees for safe
return - the obstruction of the provisions of the Dayton
Agreement by the Republic of Croatia.
The Federal Republic of Yugoslavia is
economically weakened, primarily due to the sanctions,
and then because it is not allowed to join the world
financial institutions. Also, the humanitarian
organizations continually diminish the assistance to the
refugees in the FRY. The aid received by the FRY
represents 15% of the total international humanitarian
aid to the countries on the territory of the former
Yugoslavia.
